Airstream had some good intentions in the 1970s when they decided to use dual pane windows (aka double pane). They installed dual pane windows in the front window, both front winged windows, and the upper vista view windows. The advantage of these windows is that they insulate much better than single pane due to the gas (typically argon or krypton) layer between the dual panes. This is similar to how a double walled air insulated coffee mug keeps your coffee hot much longer than a normal mug. Better insulation means better efficiency and reduced dependency on heating and cooling systems.
Table below is cost comparison to replace two vista view windows in a 1971 Airstream Globetrotter. Prices shown are estimates only and are from Oct 2014. Current prices may differ.
About 5 years ago, a customer asked me to use Prodex to insulate his trailer and since then we don’t use anything else. Prodex is a very effective insulation material, vapor barrier, and sound barrier (19db) composed of foil-foam-foil layers. It acts as a radiant barrier reflecting 97% of radiant heat which is the primary source of heat flow! This translates to significant cost reduction for heating/cooling. When compared to fiberglass, it’s just as effective or more by providing an insulation R value of up to 16. This product will help keep your trailer cool in the summer and warm in the winter. You’ll also be more energy efficient by reducing load and wear on heating/cooling systems.
Prodex also acts as a vapor barrier and helps reduce any condensation risk. It has been tested and proven to resist the growth of fungi (mold/mildew) in accordance with regulations (ASTM C 1338). Water damage is a common problem with trailers and this helps minimize its potential.
Another common problem with trailers is rodents/birds/insects. They are attracted to typical fiberglass insulation which gives them a convenient nesting material for their home. With Prodex, there's no material for them to use for nesting thereby reducing the attraction.
Prodex is easy to install. It can be installed using common fasteners such as staples, nails, or adhesives. A thermal welding process can be used to ensure all seams are impermeable. There's no risk of fiber inhalation that exists with fiberglass. Here is a Prodex installation in an Airstream trailer.
In a nutshell, Prodex is one of the best things you can do with your trailer. There are many advantages to using this product and it’s easy to install. It will help keep you cool and will increase the life of your trailer.
